Another activity we have offered this year is community service hours for youth groups, clubs (First Nation Sons, Scouts) confirmation students, etc. We have hosted several groups over the last year and ask only two things in return. Each person in the group must write and bring a letter to a "Freedom Fighter", noting their home address (most of the time they will get responses from the troops); and we ask that the group bring "Wish List" donation items to enhance our inventory. While there, we have the group members sort inventory, make up toiletry packets, snack packets, small zip lock bags of handiwipes, Q-tips, beef jerky, candy, etc. We also have these individuals sit down and read through the binders of letters and pictures we have received back from the troops.
Before they leave, we assemble a package for a "Freedom Fighter" and include the group's letters and pictures. This way they see the complete process. We emphasize to them that the next time this package is opened, it will be in the hands of a "Freedom Fighter" somewhere in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, etc. The groups really get into the spirit of support for the troops.
We would appreciate any help you can give us.
